Why your chimney needs a cap

You need a chimney cap to keep out animals, birds, leaves and other debris, but a chimney cap will also protect a chimney from the long-term effects of the inclimate weather.

Rain Damage

If you do not have a chimney cap rain will pour in and mix with soot or creosote which will result in odors and deterioration of the chimney walls.  It can eventually run down into your fireplace or stove, fireplace insert or furnace, where it can cause mortar deterioration and/or rust damage to the fireplace damper.  When rain mixes with coal soot, it is very destructive.  Rain can also damage flue walls.  Moisture will eventually get into cracks which can freeze and expand  resulting in expansion of cracks and potential more severe permanent damage.

Animals

Many animals will infiltrate an open chimney.  Chimney sweeps often get calls about a chimney with noises: squirrels, cats, raccoons, birds, snakes, barn owls and other things will crawl into a nice tight dark hole for refuge or nesting.  Raccoon feces often contain the eggs of a roundworm parasite, bayliscaris procyonis, which can be fatal to people.  The parasite can remain viable in the environment for years, withstanding heat and cold.  Bird nests can block a flue or provide fuel for a chimney fire.  Depending upon the heating source, a blockage may result in carbon monoxide feeding back into the home resulting in some potential fatal outcomes.

Standard Copper Chimney Cap

Standard Flue Chimney Caps - a protective covering for chimneys usually made of stainless steel,  copper, aluminum, or galvanized metal.  A chimney cap should have a mesh screening that serves the dual purpose of spark arrestor and animal barrier.  Chimney caps also prevents rain, debris and other foreign materials  from entering the flue of the chimney.

Multi-Flu Chimney Cap Multi-Flue Chimney Caps - a properly sized multi-flue Chimney Cap will cover the entire top of the chimney which will prevent weathering of the crown.

There are two types of multi-flue chimney caps: Top Mount multi-flue chimney cap sits on top of the chimney and crown; the Outside Mount multi-flue cap has an outer flange which hangs down over the top row of the chimney.  The chimney cap is then either attached with an adhesive or bolts depending upon the type of chimney construction and the chimney cap utilized.

Custom Full Cover Chimney Cap

Custom Full Cover Chimney Caps - Sometimes you can't find a stock chimney cap that will meet your the needs of an unique chimney size or configuration.  TNT certified chimney sweep can custom make a cap that will fit your chimney perfectly.  We can custom fit a single or multi-flu chimney cap.

Top Mount Chimney Damper
Top Mount Chimney Dampers - A top mount damper will provide protection for your chimney year round.  When closed it works like a chimney cap and seals the chimney so that heat and air can not escape from the home.  Additionally, it acts as a animal barrier and prevents debris from entering the chimney.

Custom Chimney Shrouds
Custom Chimney Shrouds - can be used to cover unattractive chimney caps or pan covers with a custom chimney shroud. The chimney shroud is designed to make your chimney and roofline more aesthetically pleasing. Your  custom chimney shroud can be used as a chimney cap by adding an additional animal barrier, if necessary.

Custom Chimney Pan Covers (with or without holes) - a rain pan cover is located below the chimney shroud.  It prevents excess water from draining down through the chimney into the house.

Unfortunately, rain pans rust out and must be replaced.  This is a serious problem that can only be determined by a chimney inspection.  If your chimney is leaking, then there is a possibility that your rain pan has rusted through.

There are no standard rain pans, and must be custom made.

TNT Quality Services will do thorough inspections of your chimney, fireplace, chimney caps, chimney liners, chimney inserts, stoves and fuel burners to ascertain whether your equipment needs cleaning or repair.  TNT Quality Services will only do necessary cleaning and repairs.
